The scarab in this piece is actually vintage glass from the 1920's made in Czechoslovakia and it has the look of carnelian. Hammered and stamped pewter form the wings of the scarab decorated with sterling wire lined cut-outs. A carnelian stone dangles from the bottom to add a little movement, and if you flip this piece over I've cut out the back to reveal hieroglyphics molded into the back of the glass scarab!
